AWFA to WFR Upgrade
AWFA to WFR Upgrade
This 4 Day upgrade bridges your low-resource and decision-focused AWFA skills with professional level tools, techniques and knowledge to earn you a Wilderness First Responder certification - Canada’s most recognized professional wilderness medical designation. Intense, challenging and always hands-on - its not for everyone, but it might be for you!
* A valid 40 hour Advanced Wilderness & Remote First Aid certificate or equivalent is required to register for this course. Please contact us if you are unsure of your qualification.
The Red Cross Wilderness First Responder Course is the definitive top-tier professional-level wilderness medical response program in Canada. This program is a specifically focused version of the Canadian Red Cross Medical First Responder program - a nationally recognized standard of training that has been adopted by EMS agencies across Canada. The WFR Upgrade adds the First Responder's more advanced pre-hospital medical training and scope of practice to the low resource and decision-making approach of the Advanced Wilderness First Aid to create a program that is truly more than the sum of its parts - a challenging, intensive program that will have you prepared to intervene and manage medical emergencies on a higher level whenever - and wherever - they arise.
This course takes place on Cyprus Mountain, in the Nordic Area.

KEY TOPICS COVERED
The move from Advanced Wilderness First Aid to Wilderness First Responder is a move from a very prepared lay person to a dialed in professional medical responder. All aspects of patient care - from planning to assessments to treatments - get a significant upgrade, as you prepare to be the person who responds to an emergency call, rather than the person who is making one. AWFA principles will be reviewed, but the real magic is addition of a more integrated body systems approach to assessing patients, greater decision-making capabilities, professional tools like oxygen administration, blood pressure cuffs, and a host of more advanced treatment options, and a real extended care experience during the an overnight scenario.
