About Basic Life Support (BLS)

Enroll in the Canadian Red Cross Basic Life Support course to gain the confidence and skills needed to manage a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) response as part of a team.

This course is specifically designed for professionals with a duty to respond during emergencies.

No previous training is necessary! BLS starts with the basics, and then builds your skills through essential steps, such as performing a rapid assessment, manual airway management, breathing management and chest compressions, and rapid defibrillation with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), all while working with and leading a team of professionals to deliver true “high performance CPR”.

Add optional oxygen administration and specialized airway management equipment to your training and certification, and be ready to use all the tools available in a professional or semi-professional setting.

When you complete this course, you will be equipped with the essential knowledge and skills to not only respond but lead in an immediately life threatening medical emergency.

BLS Course Content

• PPE

• Primary Assessment

• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

• Managing Airway Obstructions

• Assisted Ventilation

• Special Considerations: BLS in trauma, hypothermia and pregnancy

• High performance CPR

• Optional: Oxygen Administration: Pulse oximetry; supplemental oxygen; oxygen cylinders and regulators; oxygen delivery devices (non-rebreather masks, simple face masks, nasal cannulas); administering and monitoring oxygen

• Optional: Airway Management: Oropharyngeal (OPA) airways and nasopharyngeal (NPA) airways, insertion and removal; supraglottic airways (awareness only); manual suction devices
