Congratulations on choosing First Responder, your first step into the world of professional pre-hospital medicine. Below you will find important information to help you prepare for your course, including scheduling and location details, how to access your pre-course study material and prerequisite course, and preparation tips. Before you go, please be certain that you,

  • Understand your course location and schedule.

  • Can access your online pre-study, and have allotted sufficient time to complete it before your course begins.

Your FR Classroom

Vancouver Learning Center: 8168 Granville St (at 66th Ave), Unit 209.

  • Plenty of free parking nearby; the area is also served by bus route #10.

  • Safeway, Starbucks, and a wonderful assortment of restaurants are also within a few minutes walk.

Squamish Learning Center: 1909 Maple Drive, Unit 101, Squamish BC

  • Large, free parking lot; the area is also served by bus route #3.

  • There is a cafe, convenience store, and pub close by. Restaurants are a short drive away.

Our learning centers include drinking water, hot water, coffee and a small fridge and microwave for your use and convenience.

 

Your FR Schedule

Full-Time: 7 Days, Thursday - Friday + Monday - Friday, 9 AM - 6 PM.

Part-Time: 3 Weekends, Friday 5:30 PM - 9:30 PM + Saturday - Sunday 9 AM - 6 PM

 

Online Study Components

Pre-Class Study Modules (Required)

You must complete the 7 Pre-Course Study Modules on our Learning Management System (LMS) before you begin your in-class training. These modules take between 20 and 30 hours to complete, depending on the individual.

(I know you are doing FR, not EMR, but the pre-study modules are the same. We really do love you all equally.)

If you do not already have access to these modules, an account will be set up for you on our LMS by the end of the next business day following your registration.

To access the LMS and your study materials,

  1. Access our LMS here.

  2. Your username is your email address.

  3. Your password is: #1Student

  4. Click on EMR Pre-Study to get started

*** Important! There is an annoying bug in our LMS that sometimes prevents modules from being marked as complete. As long as you have completed all the quizzes and knowledge assessments in the module, we can see that the work has been done - the system may not recognize your accomplishment, but we do! :-)

Homework Modules (Recommended)

When you log into the LMS, you will also see that you have access to the EMR Online Modules.

First Responder students will be assigned the Module 1 Homework Modules during your course, but if you have time it is highly recommended that you also complete as many as you can BEFORE your in-class training begins - it will make your training significantly less intense. There are 7 modules, and each takes between 60 and 90 minutes to complete.

Professional response involves a structured approach to patient care. Our diabetic scenario video – performed by some of our alumni – will give you a good idea of some of your goalposts in this course.

 

Textbooks and Study Materials

All study materials are included in the cost of the course. Besides the online study material, you also get:

  • Emergency Care for Professional Responders textbook* (PDF access here)

  • Treatment and Training Protocols (PDF access here, hardcopy distributed in class).

  • Canadian Red Cross Basic Life Support Field Guide (Hardcopy distributed in class).

  • Student Stethoscope and Blood Pressure Cuff (Distributed in class).

*If you would prefer a hardcopy of this textbook, contact us to purchase for $140).

 

Classroom Expectations

Clothing, Materials and Equipment

Please bring everything you need for a full day of class, including:

  • Notebook, pencils/pens

  • Refillable water bottle or hot beverage container

    • Drinking water and coffee are provided

  • Lunch and snacks

    • We have a small fridge and microwave in the classroom

    • There are also plenty of restaurants within a 5 minute walk

  • We will provide all required PPE & necessary medical equipment.

Punctuality and Attendance

  • 100% attendance is required for successful completion of your class. In the case of an unavoidable absence, we will do our best to schedule into a later class to complete your certification. A transfer charge might apply.

    • Please do not ask to take time off from your program - even a few hours - and still complete your certification on time. This request will be refused.

  • Late entries are disruptive. You are expected to be in class and ready to start at the scheduled class start time. If you have to be late, please inform your instructor. Unavoidable emergencies happen, but if lateness becomes a habit, you might be asked to leave the program.
