Program Overview
The Wilderness First Aid Instructor Training Program (WFAITP) by Coast Wilderness Medical is a 5-day intensive introduction to the principles and practices of excellent Wilderness First Aid instruction. This training will build on your existing Wilderness First Aid knowledge with concepts like learner-centered lesson design, group dynamics and facilitation, verbal and non-verbal communication for instructors, conflict management, public speaking, and other essential skills necessary to be a truly outstanding instructor!
The WFAITP includes the Canadian Red Cross Fundamentals of Instruction and Wilderness First Aid Instructor certifications. The full pathway to becoming a Red Cross-certified Wilderness First Aid instructor can be found below.
Program Details
Course Prerequisites:
Unexpired Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification.
Recent (less than 30 days) Skills Assessment.
Course Schedule:
5 Full Days of Training (9 am to 5 pm).
100% Attendance is Mandatory.
Location:
Coast Wilderness Medical, Vancouver Training Base: 8168 Granville St. Unit #209
Cohort Size:
Maximum 8 Participants.
Tuition and Fees:
Tuition: $1995
Application Deposit: $50 (Refundable if application is unsuccessful).
The Instructor Development Pathway
1. Prerequisites
Over 18 years old.
Unexpired Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification.
Current (less than 30 days) Wilderness First Aid skills assessment.
Passion for wilderness medicine and education.
Energy and enthusiasm to motivate 12 students on even the gloomiest of days!
2. Online and Classroom Learning (WFAITP)
Online Fundamentals of Instruction learning module.
5 consecutive days of in-class development.
Includes a minimum of 4 practice teaching modules.
3. Practical Teaching Experience (TE)
Optional: Teaching observation (one or more full courses).
Online Teaching Experience Module.
Online or in-person coaching sessions with your Teaching Experience Supervisor (TES).
Teaching Experience (minimum of one full course, supervised by your TES).
4. Professional Development (Highly Recommended)
Continuing Education: Accessing wilderness medicine and teaching resources through Coast Wilderness Medical Training, the Canadian Red Cross, Wilderness Medical Associates, the Canadian Association of Wilderness Medicine and others on an ongoing basis.
Skills Coaching: Liaising with a Coast Wilderness Medical TES on a regular basis to discuss, observe and give feedback on your teaching methods.
