Course Information

Take a rock rescue course and you’ll learn how to get someone off the wall. Take a remote first aid course and you’ll learn how to care for them. Take our integrated Rock Rescue Remote First Aid course and you’ll get three days of both! We will walk you through the full self-rescue process, providing you with tools & skills to problem solve your way out of emergencies.

There will be a maximum of 12 participants, and 6:1 ratios will be maintained when on the rock.

Course Ethos

Gain the confidence you need to make informed decisions in emergencies when rescue is hours or days away! If you spend any time climbing, Rock Rescue Remote First Aid will prepare you to manage medical emergencies when resources are scarce, you are stuck on the side of a wall and rescue could be hours away. Don’t expect rigid protocols - a focus on basic principles, simple but effective techniques, and informed decision making is at the heart of our instructing philosophy.

Instructors

Bronwyn Hodgins is a professional rock climber and ACMG guide, based out of Squamish. She was the first Canadian female to free climb El Capitan in Yosemite, with her 5-day ascent of Freerider (1000m,13a) in 2018. In 2019, she led an expedition to Baffin Island, where she established new free routes on Mt Asgard (1000m, 11a) and an unnamed tower (400m, 13a) with her husband Jacob Cook. Her experience free climbing on big walls around the world greatly informs her understanding of technical rock rescue systems.

Course Outline

To create the RRRFA, Bronwyn & Moira combined their mutual expertise to create a three day lesson plan that combines rock rescue and remote first aid topics to cover both in a natural and practical way, focusing on giving students the hands-on experience they need to integrate those skills when they need them.

The course is built around group mini-lectures, discussions and activities leading into skills practice in small, dedicated breakout groups. The weekend will culminate in combined, comprehensive scenarios that highlight and consolidate the skills you’ve learned.
